RealUbi
The ‘RealUbi’ research partner project (2009 – 2011) of Media Lab at Aalto University School of Art and Design was funded by Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation.
The ‘RealUbi’ project was part of a larger research project of the multidisciplinary UBI (‘UrBan Interactions’) research program of University of Oulu (www.ubioulu.fi). The UrBan Interactions’ program brings together researchers from engineering, computer science, architecture, business, art, economics, design and cultural anthropology.
RealUbi / Breathing life
We wanted to make use of the opportunity we have of doing research and development in the area of ubiquitous and mobile computing to also study and learn more about the notion of digital cultural heritage within a multicultural context.
As part of the testing of the multimodal tools being developed in the RealUBI project (RealUBI), we enacted a design research experiment with a group of Helsinki youth. As Finnish society becomes a more multi-cultural society, some of the questions that emerge are: What is the relation between one’s own cultural identity and the general culture at-large? When and how do young people recognize something as being cultural heritage? These are some of the questions that we began to research.
